The information provided by The UK Waterfalls Guide is intended to help visitors plan and enjoy waterfall walks and outdoor trips. The guides are based on personal experience and observations from visits to the locations described.
However, outdoor conditions can change, and the information provided should not be treated as a guarantee that conditions will be the same when you visit.
1. Personal experience
The waterfall guides published on The UK Waterfalls Guide are based on my own experiences of visiting and walking the routes described.
I aim to provide accurate and useful information based on what I experienced at the time of my visit, including information about routes, parking, access, facilities, walking distances, estimated walking times, difficulty and general conditions.
However, circumstances can change after a guide has been written or updated.
2. Photographs
Photographs published on The UK Waterfalls Guide are taken during my visits and are intended to provide a representation of the location at the time they were taken.
Natural environments change over time and conditions may differ from those shown in photographs.
3. Conditions can change
Waterfalls and their surrounding areas are natural environments and conditions can change quickly.
Information such as the following may change without notice:
- Water levels and flow
- Weather and ground conditions
- Paths and walking routes
- Access arrangements
- Parking availability or restrictions
- Road conditions
- Toilets and other facilities
- Opening times or closures
- Signs and local restrictions
- Land access and rights of way
- Vegetation and fallen trees
- Erosion, flooding or other natural changes
You should always assess the conditions for yourself before and during your visit and follow any current signs, notices, restrictions or instructions from landowners and local authorities.
4. Walking routes and difficulty
Distances, walking times and difficulty ratings provided in the guides are estimates based on my own experience of the route.
Your experience may be different depending on your fitness, experience, footwear, weather, ground conditions, route changes and other circumstances.
A route described as easy, moderate or difficult should not be taken as a guarantee that it will be suitable for you.
You are responsible for deciding whether a route is appropriate for your own abilities and circumstances.
5. Natural hazards
Waterfalls, rivers, streams, woodland and other outdoor environments can contain significant hazards.
These may include:
- Slippery rocks, mud and paths
- Uneven or unstable ground
- Steep slopes and drops
- Deep or fast-moving water
- Strong currents
- Falling rocks or branches
- Flooding
- Sudden changes in water levels
- Hidden obstacles
- Ice, snow or extreme weather
- Remote or difficult-to-access locations
You should take appropriate care, wear suitable clothing and footwear, and consider the conditions before deciding whether to continue with a walk or approach a waterfall.
Never assume that an area is safe simply because it is described as accessible or suitable for visitors.
6. Waterfalls and water safety
Waterfalls and waterways can be dangerous even when they appear calm or shallow.
Water levels and currents can change rapidly, particularly following periods of heavy rainfall.
You should never climb waterfalls or enter fast-moving, deep or otherwise hazardous water.
Follow all warning signs and local restrictions and keep an appropriate distance from edges, drops and other hazards.
7. Wild swimming
Some of the guides on The UK Waterfalls Guide include information about swimming or wild swimming.
Any reference to swimming, wild swimming or the suitability of a location for swimming is based on personal observation and experience and should not be interpreted as a recommendation that a location is safe for swimming.
Wild swimming and entering natural bodies of water carry inherent risks, including cold water, changing water levels, currents, submerged hazards, difficult exits, poor water quality and sudden changes in weather or conditions.
You are responsible for making your own assessment of whether entering the water is appropriate and safe.
Never rely solely on information provided by The UK Waterfalls Guide when deciding whether to swim.
For further information, please also read the Wild Swimming Safety information provided on this website.
8. Children and families
Where a waterfall or walk is described as family-friendly or suitable for children, this reflects my own assessment and experience at the time of visiting.
It is not a guarantee that a location will be safe or suitable for every child.
Adults remain responsible for supervising children and assessing whether the location, route and conditions are appropriate.
Particular care should be taken around water, steep drops, slippery surfaces and uneven terrain.
9. Dogs
Where a location is described as dog-friendly, this reflects my own experience or the information available to me when the guide was prepared.
This does not guarantee that dogs will be permitted at all times or throughout the entire route.
Dogs may be required to remain on leads or may be restricted from certain areas, particularly where livestock, wildlife or local restrictions apply.
Dog owners are responsible for checking current restrictions and deciding whether a route and its conditions are suitable for their dog.
10. Parking and facilities
Parking information, including suggested car parks, parking charges, availability and access, is provided for guidance only.
Parking arrangements can change without notice.
Similarly, information about toilets, cafés, shops and other facilities may change or become unavailable.
Please check current information before travelling where this is important to your plans.
11. Weather and preparation
Weather can have a significant effect on waterfall walks and outdoor conditions.
Rain can increase water levels, create flooding, make paths slippery and change the difficulty of a route.
Cold weather, ice, snow, heat and strong winds can also create additional hazards.
You should check the weather forecast and consider recent weather conditions before setting out.
Make sure you have appropriate clothing, footwear, food, water and any navigation or safety equipment appropriate for your planned visit.
12. Navigation
Route descriptions and directions on The UK Waterfalls Guide are intended as helpful guidance and should not be relied upon as your sole means of navigation.
You should use appropriate maps, navigation tools and other reliable sources where necessary.
If you are unfamiliar with an area, make sure you understand your planned route before setting out.
13. Emergency situations
The UK Waterfalls Guide does not provide emergency, medical, rescue or professional navigation services.
If you encounter an emergency, contact the appropriate emergency services.
Do not put yourself or others at risk attempting a rescue.
14. Accuracy of information
I make reasonable efforts to ensure that the information published on The UK Waterfalls Guide is accurate and useful.
However, I cannot guarantee that all information will always be complete, current or free from errors.
Information may become outdated between visits or updates to a guide.
If you notice information that appears to be incorrect or has changed, please contact The UK Waterfalls Guide so that it can be reviewed.
15. Your responsibility
By using the information provided by The UK Waterfalls Guide, you acknowledge that you are responsible for making your own decisions about whether a particular walk, route, waterfall or activity is suitable for you.
You should consider your own abilities, experience, equipment, health, the weather and current conditions before setting out.
You should always follow current signs, warnings, restrictions and instructions from landowners, local authorities and other relevant organisations.
You should carry out your own research where appropriate and should not rely solely on information provided by The UK Waterfalls Guide when planning a visit.
16. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, The UK Waterfalls Guide shall not be responsible for loss, injury, damage or other consequences arising from reliance on information provided on this website or from visiting any location described on the website.
This includes, but is not limited to, changes in routes, access, parking, facilities, weather, water levels, terrain or other conditions occurring after information has been published.
Nothing in this disclaimer excludes or limits liability where doing so would be unlawful, including liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence or any other liability that cannot legally be excluded or limited.
17. Changes to this disclaimer
This Disclaimer & Safety Information may be updated from time to time as the website develops or information and circumstances change.
